We design each La Vie en Périgord program to take advantage of the season's produce and special events. The following is a typical program; your program may vary.
DAY ONE Afternoon arrival. Settle into La Combe and explore the house and grounds. Over welcome apéritifs and hors d'oeuvres we'll discuss the upcoming week's activities. Dinner at home will introduce you to some southwest French specialties.
DAY TWO In the morning, a trip to the farmers' market in nearby St. Cyprien, where we'll buy fresh produce for an al fresco lunch back home. In the afternoon we'll discover some of Europe's finest prehistoric cave paintings at Font de Gaume. We dine in a beautifully converted water mill.
DAY THREE Today we head north for a private visit to magnificent Château de Losse, and lunch at the exquisite 16th century Manoir d'Hautegente. In the afternoon we visit a chaudronnier who makes hand-beaten copper kitchenware in the shadow of a 12th century abbey. This evening we dine at La Combe.
DAY FOUR It is market day at Sarlat, one of the most perfectly preserved Renaissance cities in Europe. Lunch at the historic Présidial restaurant, followed by a visit to spectacular Château de Beynac and a cruise on the Dordogne river. In the evening we walk through the cloisters of Cadouin abbey before dining at a renowned local auberge.
DAY FIVE In the morning we set off to explore the old river port of Bergerac, then on to wine tasting and a home-made picnic lunch at a famous château-vineyard. On the way back, we'll stop at antique and brocante shops, followed by apéritif and dinner at La Combe.
DAY SIX Today we'll be taking a first-hand look (and taste) at how the local people prepare renowned périgordine delicacies. We'll call in on an auberge-ferme to see how foie gras is made, visit a unique moulin where organic flour is stone ground, made into dough, and baked in oakwood-fired ovens, visit the world's only truffle museum, and see a walnut-oil pressing mill. This evening we'll dine on the farm-fresh produce we've watched being made today.
DAY SEVEN In the morning we'll visit Monpazier, the finest of Périgord's 12th century bastide (fortified) towns, followed by lunch in the marketplace and a visit to craggy Château de Biron. We return to La Combe before leaving for our farewell dinner at the Michelin two-starred Centenaire, celebrated as the finest restaurant in the Périgord.
DAY EIGHT Relax over breakfast, then au revoirs to new-found friends before leaving Périgord on your journey homeward.
